Adam at the NewsStar had a great article today on the recruiting disadvantages Berry and company face. The biggest part -

Only 7 percent of athletes in Louisiana meet ULM's current academic requirements. The math gets even grimmer when it's broken down by region.

ULM requires a minimum 2.35 GPA — with a 2.0 minimum in core subjects — and a minimum ACT composite score of 21 and sub scores of at least 18 in English and 19 in math for all students, including student-athletes.

Berry and his staff don't have any wiggle room either. If a prospect doesn't meet all the requirements, he isn't getting in.

"A kid could have a 23 or 25 ACT but be a point shy in a composite score —that's been a killer for us. Quite honestly we've had to go to Dallas and Oklahoma just to get test scores," Berry said. "Consequently any time one of your competitors can point to the fact you might not be able to get a kid into school they're going to use it against you.

"We aren't going to offer a kid and have him sign unless we know we can get him in. That's professional suicide in our business, and you lose all credibility with high school coaches."
