According to Shane Mettlen of the Daily News-Record, SBC members will receive an estimated $1.2m from ESPN this coming year. This is reported to be about a $700k increase over last year. From there, next year and forward each SBC member will receive an estimated $2m per year. If true, ULM has a new pot of money coming that can be immediately turned into. amongst other things, salary supplements for all coaches. They could use this coming year's $700k and allocate:
$75k to the athletic department for hiring other positions
$400,000 to provide salary supplements to assistant coaches (60% to football and 40% to all assistants in men's and women's basketball, baseball, and softball)
$200,000 to provide salary supplements to assistant coaches in all other sports
$25,000 to supplement recruiting budgets
For the $800k in future years, they could allocate it as follows:
$600k to provide salary supplements to all HCs at ULM (Bowden getting a $150k increase taking his base salary to $500k and the men's basketball HC getting $100k increase taking him to $325k)
$100k to purchase athletic training equipment
$25k to provide a salary supplement to the AD
$75k to provide supplemental funding to the cheer squad and the band to support performances at athletic events
If Scott can implement this type of plan, it would allow ULM a better opportunity to possibly retain coaching talent without having to go out and harvest new dollars. The athletic department could then just worry about raising money for facilities enhancements and to start a sports nutrition program for athletics.
