Coming off of a bye week, ULM will travel to play Iowa State. Iowa State came into the season with Top 25 aspirations. A hard fought win against FCS Northern Iowa and a loss to rival Iowa has the Cyclones sitting at 1-1. ULM comes into the game with a 1-1 record as well, with a win over a Grambling and an OT loss to Florida State (last time saying it, but we should have gone for 2).
Iowa's offense is not much unlike ULMs. They shouldn't present anything offensively that ULM has not seen within the past 2 season, except a big TE and some big receivers. Iowa State's defense is another story. After 2 games, ULM comes into the game with the #41 ranked offense in the country and the #111 ranked defense. After 2 games, Iowa State comes into the game with the #51 ranked offense in the country and the #30 ranked defense. ESPN gives Iowa State an 86.4% chance of winning.
I like our chances in this game, so long as our offensive game plan is solid. Pressure will be placed upon our OLine to make proper blocking calls. We will be facing a defense that I feel is the best we will see this year (Memphis included). As one person who I spoke with about Iowa State's defense described it, it is sorta like Coach Reffett's 3-3-5 blitzing defense but executed using P5 players. The good thing is we are catching Iowa State right after a huge emotional loss to Iowa and right before their first conference game against what should be a 3-0 Baylor team. For that reason, I feel like we can go into Ames, Iowa and pull off the win...so long as our guys are prepared. We cannot spot them 21 points and expect a comeback like we did at FSU. Iowa State's defense is too good for that.
Also, our top pass rusher is back in Starks. Ivin White had some good pressures at FSU. Let's turn them loose on Purdy (Iowa State's QB).
Prediction
ULM 23
Iowa State 21
