The first scrimmages of spring practice are always compelling. Which players will stand out? Who will make a push for a starting position? Will new players make a name for themselves, or will the returning starters separate?
The coaching staff gave players the opportunity to shine and make a case for themselves with an audience of the public and over 10 local high school coaches. They mixed up some units with starters and second-teamers to see who would compete the hardest.
This was most prevalent on the defensive line. Howard Houston was able to get some time with the starters and played well. He was able to get a sack on Garrett Smith and brought pressure up the middle on several occasions. Nate Link also got some work in the defensive end position and showed his promise. The star of the defensive line is still Caleb Tucker at defensive end. It felt like he was in the backfield on every play.
The offensive line was able to open up some good holes for the running backs, especially on the right side of the line. On simulated first downs, the running backs were able to break off several 10+ yard runs.
Some of the players that stood out in this scrimmage:
Garrett Smith (QB): Smith's experience as a starter in his redshirt freshman season definitely showed. He made several good decisions and key throws downfield. He put some distance between himself and the other QB's.|
Tyler Cain AND Ben Luckett (RB's): Both Cain and Luckett were able to make some good runs. Cain showed his quickness breaking through the offensive line and even showed a little power and determination. Luckett had some very powerful runs, including one that went over 30 yards with 3 or 4 broken tackles.
Markis McCray (WR): McCray ran some crisp routes and showed some speed. He turned a 5-yard slant into a 40 yard touchdown; he ran around some defenders and through others.
The Warhawks will take a week off for spring break before returning to practice Tuesday, April 5th at 5:00 P.M.
