Most of us assume when it comes to the OL or DL that size matters. There has been a lot of discussion about our issues with the defense is because we are undersized on the DL.
I was looking the other day at the final stats for rushing defense. We ended up 4th from the bottom in rushing defense. As I was looking for the top teams in stopping the run, I see Air Force is 15th in rushing defense. Air Force looks to run a 3-4 defense. There front three who started the most games at their position weigh 230, 280, and 285. The LBs weigh 240(probably a hybrid lb/de), 195, 220, and 225. I think we all can agree that is not a large defense. Here the most impressive think about Air Force's defense. They played New Mexico #1 rushing team, Army #2, Navy #4, Colorado St. #31, and Wyoming #37. Yet they still finish number 15 in the nation in stopping the run. BTW, they only allowed 118 rushing yards a game.
Is our problem size or talent or a little of both?
