The Warhawks wrapped up their 2016 spring practices today with the annual Maroon and Gold Spring Game. There was a good number of fans in attendance to see how the team looks under Coach Viator and his new coaching staff.
While some coaching staffs like to split the two teams in the spring game between starters and non-starters, Coach Viator had starters sprinkled in within the backups in both teams. He says this is helps create competition between the players.
Tyler Cain began the game with a 46 yard run for the Maroon team. Unfortunately, the offense led by quarterback Will Collins was unable to move the ball any further, and Craig Ford ended the drive with his first field goal of the day from 43 yards.
The Gold team was able to get their first possession of the day, and answered the Field Goal with a 9-play Touchdown Drive. The running game was able to move the ball down the field with Kaylon Watson and Ben Luckett combining for 32 yards on 4 rushes on the drive. The touchdown came on a 28 yard pass from Garrett Smith to Brennan Bradley.
The first turnover of the game happened at the end of the first quarter as Smith was intercepted by Nick Ingram as Bradley ran a poor route.
Chandler Eiland then entered the game at quarterback for the Maroon team and led them to their first touchdown. The drive almost stalled, but a late hit personal foul was called on Cortez Sisco. After gaining a few first downs, Cain again showed his explosiveness with a 46 yard touchdown run.
Two possessions later, the Gold team answered with a touchdown of their own, scoring after only 4 plays. Smith opened the drive with a 30 yard pass to Brynden Vance, and he followed it up with a 26 yard jump ball to RJ Turner. Luckett had a 2 yard run before Smith ended the drive on a 17 yard touchdown run off of a read option.
The third quarter featured only one score, a 46 yard field goal for the gold team. The drive began at the maroon 30 after an interception off of Will Collins by Alex Johnson. The gold team only moved the ball one yard before the field goal.
Ford added his third field goal of the day, this time for the gold team on a drive that went between the third and fourth quarters. The drive was highlighted by a 29 yard defensive pass interference and a 21 yard completion to Turner. After 3 incomplete passes on first and goal, Ford ended the drive with a 27 yard field goal to give the gold team a 23-10 lead.
The longest play of the day, however, came from the maroon team. Ken'Darious Harris broke off a 72 yard touchdown run to make it a one possession game.
After a defensive hold, the maroon team got the ball back on their own 6 yard line with 51 second left. Tre' Hunter blitzed off the blind side to sack Collins in the end zone for a safety to end the game with a 25-17 victory for the Gold team.
The two teams combined for 307 yards rushing on 46 attempts. There were 41 pass attempts for 260 total yards, which shows how much more committed to the running game Coach Kubik and Coach Viator's offense is.
